Vientiane
The name Vientiane means "city of the sandal", and it is located on a bend of the Mekong River. Although it is the largest city in Laos, it is small enough to explore easily. Nam Kat Yorla Pa to Pakbeng
The journey to Pakbeng passes through villages of the Kamu, Hmong, and Lao Loum ethnic groups. The rice, known as sticky rice, is sown once a year and forms the staple of the local diet. Champasak is located about 8 km from the pre-Angkorian temples of Wat Phu Champasak. The Hindu Khmer chose this site for the spring flowing near the top of the 607-meter hill and for the hilltop's shape, reminiscent of a lingam, a symbol of Shiva. Si Phan Don, a 50 km stretch of the Mekong just north of the Cambodian border, widens up to 14 km during the rainy season, forming the river's widest point.
